What's Your Favorite Fairy Tale?

In the midst of trying to catch up on email, work, and personal responsibilities, I discovered a blog post from A Quid for the Quill stating that Sunday, February 26 was Tell A Fairy Tale Day.  Quid's blog meandered through several aspects of fairy tales, but what struck me the most was her question:  What is your favorite fairy tale?

She invited us to recall them, admitting that her favorites didn't make the Disney big screen.  I knew the answer to this question, immediately.  My favorite fairy tales were not done by Disney either. Two of them you might be familiar with, but I'd be surprised if you know the third, and probably my favorite as a child.

Golden Press published a beautiful series of Hans Christian Andersen stories illustrated with 3D puppet holographic images.  I owned two of these books, The Wild Swans which Juliet Marillier used as part of the basis of her book, Daughter of the Forest.  The other Golden Press book I loved was The Snow Queen.  I no longer have my copy of The Snow Queen, but I read my original copy of The Wild Swans to my granddaughter a few months ago.  She fell under its spell, which thrilled me to no end.




But, as a child, the fairy tale I probably read the most was Snow White and Rose Red.  Maybe you didn't know that these two characters co-starred in a story, but they did.  Both found love without the help of seven dwarves. and a bear (who really was a prince) played a large part in their story.  Not too long ago, I pulled out my fairy tale volume of The New Junior Classics (which isn't so new anymore) and discovered my memory of the story contains gaps.  The story didn't enthrall me like it used to, but then, I'm  not ten years old anymore, either.  It still lives in my heart as a story that filled my mind with wonder and imagination.

As for Disney?  From the classics, I prefer Sleeping Beauty.  Of the more recent titles, my favorite is Beauty and the Beast.

I was always a fan of Jack & the Beanstalk and Rumpelstiltskin. As for Disney, Mulan and Tangled are still my favorites.

Stuart, I'll have to check out the Egyptian Cinderella. Sounds interesting.

Joshua, my favorite all time Disney movie line comes from Mulan: let's go kick some Hunny buns!

So glad I inspired you! =) I actually adore "Snow White and Rose Red". A lot of people seem to think that Disney's Snow White was taken FROM that story, but you and I know that it wasn't. Great choice!

And response to the Egyptian Cinderella, there's actually a picture book of it that I remember reading LOTS as a child. Lisa, thanks for the link. I'm glad that someone else knew Snow White and Rose Red. Usually I get blank stares when I mention it.

I love fairy tales. My favorite was probably the ugly duckling.

Fairy tales are gaining such popularity these days, both on TV and on the big screen. I enjoy.

In my last post, Character Development: the Johari Window , I introduced the Johari Window as a tool for developing your characters. It's important that your character not know everything about their situation. These unknowns can lead to an intriguing story and create possibilities for conflict within the story. He Said, She Said, Who Said? Punctuating Dialogue

Courtesy of Morguefile.com I've been focusing my posts on workshops and panels I taught or participated on at the Imaginarium Convention. Although this serves as a poor substitute for the real thing, I can share some highlights. This week, we're going to explore dialogue punctuation. The first thing writers need to learn is how to properly punctuate dialogue. I've discovered, over the years, that many don't know how. Notice in the first example below, the dialogue starts at the beginning of the sentence, and the speaking tag (he said, she said, Paul said, etc.) follows it.  A few points to notice: The first letter of the quotation is capitalized. What the person says is a sentence, so it must be capitalized. A comma comes directly after the quote and INSIDE the quotation marks. You can, also, have a question mark or exclamation point here.
