On the Conference Road

I'm headed for Louisville, KY this weekend for the Imaginarium Convention. After three other SFF fandom cons and a Meet-the-Author event, I'm excited to rub elbows with writers interested in advancing their skills and careers. 

Speaking of Lasers & Lagers, the Meet-the-Authors event, I just got home from Panama City Beach after expanding that event into a family vacation. We had a great time swimming, checking out the shops, riding the Skywheel, and "trying" to swim with the dolphins (they were elusive thanks to recent storms). Lasers & Lagers occurred on the one rainy day which made it perfect!

I talked to lots of people about books, mingled with the other authors, and had a chance to see the inside of a very unique establishment, Lie'brary on Beck. Special thanks to the proprietor and wonderful staff of this establishment where the decor focuses on books. Even the bathroom doors look like bookshelves! Pretty cool place to talk about books and raise money for the local library. All in all, a fun time.

Now my sights are on Kentucky. I've never been to Imaginarium, but the enthusiasm of the coordinators is contagious! I'm, also, excited about my schedule for this event because I get to talk about some of my favorite workshop topics. Let's face it, once a trainer, always a trainer.

In the midst of all of this, there were quite a few giraffe births in the news! 
  • Great news from Africa on the increase of births in an area with dwindling numbers. 
  • Annabelle of the Texas Safari Ranch finally gave birth to a baby girl! You can watch new giraffe, Betty, and her mother on the live giraffe cam. 
  • And the Dallas Zoo had a giraffe birth on Independence Day!

Character Development: Using the Johari Window

In my last post, Character Development: the Johari Window , I introduced the Johari Window as a tool for developing your characters. It's important that your character not know everything about their situation. These unknowns can lead to an intriguing story and create possibilities for conflict within the story. How do you use the Johari Window? In this post, I thought I'd provide a simple example of the Johari Window with a character most people know:  Harry Potter. Below, I have filled out the Johari Window as it might appear within the first few pages of book 1, Harry Potter and The Sorceror's Stone . He Said, She Said, Who Said? Punctuating Dialogue

Courtesy of Morguefile.com I've been focusing my posts on workshops and panels I taught or participated on at the Imaginarium Convention. Although this serves as a poor substitute for the real thing, I can share some highlights. This week, we're going to explore dialogue punctuation. The first thing writers need to learn is how to properly punctuate dialogue. I've discovered, over the years, that many don't know how. Notice in the first example below, the dialogue starts at the beginning of the sentence, and the speaking tag (he said, she said, Paul said, etc.) follows it.  A few points to notice: The first letter of the quotation is capitalized. What the person says is a sentence, so it must be capitalized. A comma comes directly after the quote and INSIDE the quotation marks. You can, also, have a question mark or exclamation point here.
